Grade A vs Grade B vs Grade C: What Do Refurbished Grades Really Mean?

By RefurbVerify Editorial · Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

There is no industry-wide standard for refurb grading. Every seller defines their own grades. That said, there are broadly accepted conventions we can decode.

A
Grade A / Like New
Minimal to no visible wear. Looks and functions like new.
B
Grade B / Good
Light scratches visible up close. Fully functional.
C
Grade C / Fair
Noticeable cosmetic wear. Fully functional, deep discount.

Grade A: "Like New" or "Excellent"

Grade A is the highest condition grade. No scratches visible at normal viewing distance. For phones, Grade A typically implies battery health above 85%. The device functions identically to a new one.

Grade B: "Good" or "Very Good"

Grade B devices are fully functional but have light cosmetic wear — light scratches visible at arm's length. This is often the sweet spot for value: significant savings with minor cosmetic compromise. Battery health typically 78%+, and typically 35–45% cheaper than new.

Grade C: "Fair" or "Acceptable"

Noticeable cosmetic damage: visible scratches, scuffs, or possibly small dents. Fully functional. Best for buyers who prioritise price over aesthetics — especially if the device will live in a case.

⚠ Important: Some sellers use "Acceptable" or "Grade C" to describe devices with cracked screens. Always read the specific condition description, not just the grade label.

Which grade should you choose?

💡 Pro tip: A $200 saving on a Grade B iPhone in a $20 case is effectively the same user experience as Grade A. Grade B is usually the best overall value.
