A refurbished iPad for under $100 and a MacBook Air for under $430 are genuinely good presents. But buying second-hand tech as a gift has two traps that do not exist when you buy for yourself — and one of them turns the usual “shop early” advice on its head.

The default dad gift is something he would never buy himself, and a MacBook Air M2 at $707 against $1,399 new is exactly that. Silent, all-day battery, and enough machine for taxes, photos and a hundred browser tabs. If he already has a laptop, the Galaxy S24 Ultra at $500 from Swappa is the better call — the built-in S Pen and the camera are what people actually notice.
An iPad is the most-used gift on this list, in our judgment, because it asks nothing of the recipient. Recipes, video calls, news, books. The 10th generation at $284 is the sensible buy — flat-edged design and USB-C, so the charger matches everything else in the house. If a phone would land better, the iPhone 15 at $355 from Swappa is the pick.
There is no point pretending phone choice is neutral at that age, and in the US the blue-bubble question is real. An iPhone 14 at $248 is 61% below its launch price, still receives iOS updates, and is indistinguishable from the current model in a case. Buy 128GB — storage is what teenagers actually run out of.
For a child under about twelve, a tablet beats a phone: you can lock it down with Screen Time, it stays home, and there is no plan to manage. The 9th generation at $158 is the value pick. Buy a case at the same time. It will be dropped.
The M1 Air is still the best value laptop in the refurbished market five years after launch. $427 against $999 new, and the battery outlasts a full day of classes. For coursework there is no practical difference between this and a machine costing twice as much.
Same pick as Mom, different reason: screen size and simplicity. One caution that matters more than the device — set it up before you wrap it. Sign in to the Apple account, connect Wi-Fi, install the video-calling app they will actually use, and enlarge the text. A tablet handed over in its box is a tablet that stays in its box.
$91 for a working iPad, down from $329, is the best value on this list by a wide margin. It is an older model and it will not run everything forever, but for an office gift exchange it is unbeatable at the price.
1. The return window is the real deadline. Every gift guide tells you to shop early to beat the shipping rush. For refurbished tech that advice can cost you. Thirty days is the common return window across the sellers we track. Buy on 5 November and it shuts on 5 December — three weeks before anyone opens the box. If the screen has a mark the recipient spots on Christmas morning, you are out of options.
This is the one year the calendar helps. Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November. A 30-day window opened on either date runs to 27 or 30 December — past Christmas Day with room to spare. You can take the sale price and keep the protection, which is not true of an early-November purchase.
2. The warranty clock starts when you buy, not when they unwrap. A 12-month warranty bought on Black Friday expires the following November. The recipient gets eleven months, not twelve. Small, but worth knowing on a gift.
Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, went on sale on 23 October. A new flagship launch reliably drags previous generations down, and the stretch between a launch and Christmas is usually the best buying window of the year for a refurbished iPhone.
Pulling the other way: memory and storage costs have risen sharply as AI data centers absorb supply, which pushed new device prices up and is starting to lift second-hand prices with them. The two forces roughly cancel. Do not assume prices will be lower in January.
Check the device is not Activation Locked. An Apple device still signed in to the previous owner’s account cannot be set up by anyone else. Reputable sellers clear this, but power it on and confirm it reaches the setup screen before wrapping.
Check the battery health figure. Better sellers publish a minimum floor, commonly 80%. Swappa lists battery health per individual device, which is unusually specific for a marketplace. If a listing states nothing, ask.
Check the grade actually means what you think. “Excellent” at one seller is not “Excellent” at another — Back Market and Swappa use different scales for overlapping conditions. Our grade translator maps every seller’s published labels onto one scale.
Black Friday through the first week of December. That keeps a 30-day return window open past Christmas Day and leaves comfortable time for delivery. Ordering in October may feel organized, but it closes your return window before the gift is opened.

From any seller worth buying from, yes. Back Market includes 12 months. Swappa is a marketplace, so coverage depends on the individual seller — check the listing. Most US states also imply a warranty of merchantability on goods sold by a merchant, refurbished included.
That depends on the seller’s change-of-mind policy, which is separate from your rights if the device is faulty. Thirty days is common. It is the single strongest argument for buying on Black Friday weekend rather than in October.
