What actually changed between them

The four differences that actually matter
1. USB-C replaces Lightning
This is the upgrade most people will notice every single day. The iPhone 15 charges with the same cable as your iPad, MacBook, Nintendo Switch and almost everything else made since 2020. The iPhone 14 does not, and Apple has shipped no new Lightning phones since. Buying an iPhone 14 in 2026 means committing to a connector Apple has already retired.
One caveat worth knowing before you pay a premium for it: the base iPhone 15's USB-C port runs at USB 2.0 speeds, the same 480Mb/s as Lightning. You get cable convenience, not faster transfers. Only the Pro models got USB 3 speeds.
2. A 48MP main camera, and a zoom that works
The iPhone 15's 48MP sensor is a real jump. It outputs 24MP by default with visibly more detail, and it enables a 2× crop that Apple calls "optical quality" — close enough to a genuine telephoto that most people will not tell. The iPhone 14 has no equivalent; its 2× is plain digital zoom, and it looks like it.
In low light the two converge, because both lean on the same computational photography. If you shoot mostly indoors or at night, this difference is smaller than the spec sheet implies.
3. Dynamic Island instead of the notch
Inherited from the iPhone 14 Pro. It shows timers, boarding passes, music controls and delivery tracking in the cutout. Pleasant, well executed, and not a reason on its own to spend more.
4. A much brighter screen
2,000 nits peak outdoors against 1,200. If you regularly use your phone in direct sun — on a worksite, at the beach, cycling with it mounted — this is more noticeable than the camera. Indoors you will never see it.
What is identical
Worth stating plainly, because it is most of the phone. Both have the same 6.1-inch OLED at 60Hz (neither gets ProMotion — that is a Pro feature), the same 6GB of RAM, the same IP68 water resistance, the same Ceramic Shield glass, the same 15W MagSafe charging, the same Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection, and battery life within a rounding error of each other. Day to day, they feel like the same phone.
Software support: nobody got dropped
At WWDC in June 2026 Apple confirmed iOS 27 supports every device iOS 26 did — iPhone 11 onwards, including both the 14 and the 15. No model was cut, which had never happened before in Apple's history.
This matters for the decision. The usual argument for paying more for a newer phone is that it stays supported longer. That argument is weaker this year than it has been in a decade. The iPhone 14 is not about to be abandoned.

Battery health matters more than which model you pick
Both of these are used phones now — three and four years old respectively. A well-kept iPhone 14 at 92% battery health will be a better daily companion than a tired iPhone 15 at 81%.
Ask for the actual figure before you pay. 80% is the usual certified-refurbished floor, but on devices this age we would treat 85% as your minimum and 90%+ as a good result. Also confirm the grading scale in writing (grades are not standardised between sellers), who honours the warranty, and the return window. Remember that your state's implied-warranty rules and the seller's own return window are what actually protect you, so read both before paying.
Buy the iPhone 14 if you want the most phone for the least money. It is $140 cheaper, runs the same iOS, and gives up very little that you will notice indoors.
Buy the iPhone 15 if any of three things are true: you are tired of carrying two cable types, you take a lot of photos in daylight, or you use your phone outdoors in bright sun. Those are real, daily improvements — just not universal ones.
Buy neither if you came for Apple Intelligence. Skip to a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro, which is the cheapest model that actually supports it.
