How to know if refurbished electronics are worth it

Start here, because the answer is not always yes. Refurbished is worth it when the discount is real and the seller carries the risk. Both parts have to hold.

The discount is not automatic. When we priced ten popular devices in August 2026, the MacBook Air M4 listed refurbished at $999 — identical to its new price. On a 2025 machine there is currently nothing to gain. Go back two generations and the picture flips: the M2 Air starts at $751, a saving of roughly a third.

Refurbished is usually worth it when

  • The device is two to four years old — the discount is typically 30–60%
  • The seller states a minimum battery health, ideally 85% or better
  • There is a warranty of at least 90 days and a 30-day return window
  • You care about cosmetic condition less than function — back-cover wear costs you nothing if you use a case

Think twice when

  • The model launched in the last 12 months — the saving is often under 10%
  • No battery-health figure appears anywhere on the listing
  • The price is far below every other seller for the same grade — usually a reason, rarely a good one
  • The only warranty is a third-party plan sold at checkout

The practical test: compare the refurbished price against the current new price, not the launch price. Sellers quote savings against launch RRP because it flatters the discount.

What the two groups mean. A specialist refurbisher grades, tests and warrants every device itself, so one standard applies across the catalogue and there is one party to deal with if it fails. That includes OWC, Plug, KEH Camera, Decluttr and Gazelle. A marketplace lists other people's stock — Swappa, Back Market and Reverb — so the grading and warranty depend on which seller you buy from. Neither model is safer in the abstract; the marketplace simply moves the checking job onto you.

The gap is stark. OWC holds 4.6 stars across 39,246 reviews, which is a serious evidence base. The next tier down — Discount Electronics at 48 reviews, Discount Computer Depot at 23 — clears our 20-review minimum but only just. Those scores are real, but they rest on very little. For a laptop purchase we would weight OWC's track record far above a marginally similar score built on two dozen reviews.

Also worth knowing: several large PC brands run refurbished outlets whose only Trustpilot presence is the parent company's, which mostly collects complaints about new-product support. That is why you will see those names Unrated here rather than carrying a 1.3-star score that would misrepresent the outlet.

How to choose a trusted refurbished phone seller

Five checks, about ten minutes, and they catch nearly every seller worth avoiding.

  1. Find the Trustpilot profile — and check which country it belongs to. This is the one that catches people. Several sellers operating in the US run a single global profile spanning many countries. A strong global average tells you nothing about the US warehouse or the US returns process.
  2. Read the review count before the star rating. A 4.9 from 30 reviews is weaker evidence than a 4.5 from 19,000. We shrink every rating toward the market mean in proportion to sample size for exactly this reason.
  3. Check the BBB listing. Look past the letter grade at the pattern of complaints and, more tellingly, whether the seller responds to them.
  4. Find the published grading scale. A seller worth buying from states what each grade means and gives a minimum battery health percentage. "Excellent condition" with no number is not a grading scale.
  5. Confirm the return window. Thirty days is the US norm. Anything shorter shifts the inspection burden onto you, which is the opposite of what you are paying a refurbisher for.

Red flags that should end the transaction

  • No battery-health figure anywhere on the site or the listing.
  • A Trustpilot profile that is brand new, or a few dozen uniformly perfect entries posted close together.
  • Warranty terms that appear only after checkout.
  • A return window under 14 days, or restocking fees on a device that arrives misgraded.
  • Prices far below every other seller for the same model and grade.
  • Payment by bank transfer, Zelle or wire only. Card and PayPal give you a chargeback route; those do not.
